Who out there is trying to nail National
Novel-Writing Month? You don’t have
to do it alone
You don’t have to write your 50,000-word novel alone. Thousands of people out there are waiting to share your pain, to thump you on the back when needed and on the backside when that’s needed too.
(If that’s double-dutch, click here to find out what NaNoWriMo is all about )
If you’re trying to nail NaNoWriMo and want to hook up with more buddies, there are a lot of them right here, reading this blog. So add your details and any links in the comments. Say as much or as little about your NaNo novel as you wish – although I’d love it if you’d say a little about the novel you’re hatching. And let’s meet new NaNowers (er, is that a word?)
Proper post coming very soon!
Thank you, Gorbould on Flickr, for the picture

I’m going into my 4th year of NaNoWriMo. I will be writing a post-apocolyptic/sci-fi dystopian YA. If anyone is looking for NaNo buddies, my NaNo user name is dragonfly83.
#2 by Zelah on October 15, 2010 - 10:23 pm
I am ‘Fire Nightingale’ on NaNoWriMo.
There is a capped number of buddies that will show up on your Writing Buddies tab (unless they’ve changed it) but you can see the full list (and also see who has made you one of their buddies) by clicking on ‘Writing Buddies’ under ‘Edit Info’.
I’m at my cap but most of the people I have on there haven’t written for years so I’ll be thrilled to have some active buddies on there that can be pacemakers and will re-jig my list accordingly.
I’m working on finishing the first draft of my fantasy trilogy ‘The Omalfi Society’. Each segment of approx 50,000 words has a volume number & this one will be volume VII. Last year I wrote over 120,000 words on various projects prior to November (including Scriptfrenzy) & decided to skip NaNoWrimo as I was pregnant at the time! Prior to that though I ‘won’ four years on the trot.
The Omalfi Society is fantasy in terms of it being a made up world rather than anything particularly fantastical being in it! It’s set in a continent that is faintly European in flavour. The period is historical & it’s a little more serious than my usual light comic romances. Though it’s still a romance and still comic in places!
I’m going to have a lot of re-working to do when I’ve finished it to pull it up to where I want it to be but I have found NaNoWriMo so fantastic for getting me to actually write that I would reccomend it to anyone who wants to try writing!

Hey, wordhounds! I’m on the NaNo site (and Twitter) as amgamble. This will be my second year, and I think I know what I’m working on: a romantic thriller very loosely connected to the story I wrote last year. I have very little of the story worked out, but my recollection is that’s how I started last year, so I’m trying not to panic. And nothing like a deadline and a cheering section to get you focused and moving, right?
#4 by Jason Black on October 16, 2010 - 12:01 am
Hey all. This will be my 6th NaNo, and if I may make such a prediction, my 6th win! I’m excited to get going!
If there’s anything I’ve learened from NaNoWriMo, it’s to grab ahold of ANY source of motivation you can find to keep you on pace during November. If that means exploiting your innate competitive edge, so be it!
As it happens, I do get a bit competitive about such things. So by all means, I’ll be happy to writing-buddy anybody who needs someone to race with.
And if I may also add a short plug: NaNoWriMo is such a great cause, and has given so much to my life, this year I’m trying to give back with a sponsorship drive. I’m trying to raise $1000 for NaNoWriMo, through my sponsorship page, which you can find here:
http://www.gifttool.com/athon/MyFundraisingPage?ID=1891&AID=935&PID=173603
As a sweetener, I’m also running a contest! As Roz can tell you, I’m not only a writer but also a book doctor. So, anybody who sponsors my novel has a chance to win a professional critique of your own novel–either in partial or full form! Details at the above web page, and thanks in advance to anybody who chips in. It really is for a good cause.

Hey, Roz! Thanks for the note reminding me about this post. I’d love to have more writing buddies on NaNo!
My username is IndiaDrummond, or you can just find me here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/660166
My novel is (for now) titled “Faery Blood”. Faery Blood is a modern urban fantasy set in Perth, Scotland. (Where I live)
Here’s my working synopsis: A faery was cast out of her clan lands in the forests and forced to live on Perth’s city streets. She survived alone for years, but when a human is killed below the abandoned church where she lived, she recognised it as the work of one of her own kind. To stop the murders, she must tap into the forbidden magic that cost her everything.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who wants a writing buddy! Good luck in November, everyone!

Hey! Great post, Roz. Thanks.
I’m ‘The Midnight Novelist’ if anyone wants to add me. The more the merrier, right?
Hope to see you there.

Hi Roz…
Great idea to connect more NaNoers….and yes that is a word.
Would love to have more NaNo buddies….2 weeks to go and counting!

My novel is a supernatural mystery/suspense/thriller…
This will be my first official NaNo but not the last.
Excited! Can’t wait to get writing!

I think the term is WriMoers. (I envisage an old-fashioned lawn mower, only instead of grass cuttings it’s leaving behind piles of completed pages.)
#12 by rozmorris on October 16, 2010 - 6:11 pm
I’m sure I’ve seen WriMos and I was going to write that. But when I thought about what it stands for in full, that didn’t make sense.
I did wonder about illustrating this post with a lawn mower.
#13 by Jonathan Moore on October 18, 2010 - 8:02 am
Isn’t that an action film starring Fred Ward? WriMo: Unarmed and Dangerous.
#14 by The Drama Mama on October 16, 2010 - 8:35 pm
I’m new to NaNo. I’m not sure I have even completely set my account up. I’d love to have a little hand holding. I have 3 “stories”, 2 of which I’ve added onto, that I am considering for this, and I think I may have narrowed it down. If anyone is interested, here are the links to my possibles:
1. The Unlikely Hero (Fantasy) http://therealpoopsie.blogspot.com/2010/04/writers-workshop-unlikely-hero.html & http://therealpoopsie.blogspot.com/2010/09/red-writing-hood-unlikely-hero.html
2. Tales from the Backporch #1 (Children’s): http://therealpoopsie.blogspot.com/2010/10/red-writing-hood-rescue.html
3. Weathered (Thriller): http://therealpoopsie.blogspot.com/2010/08/red-writing-hood.html & http://therealpoopsie.blogspot.com/2010/10/red-writing-hood-weathered.html (This is the one I am leaning on.)
Anyone who wants to help, offer critique, etc. I’m all for!
#15 by The Drama Mama on October 16, 2010 - 9:57 pm
Ok, so I decided to keep working on that last one. My user name on NaNoWriMo is Stephanie Ayers. IDK why I didn’t use anything clever. Haha. I’ve added most of you, and would love to be added as well.
#16 by rozmorris on October 17, 2010 - 8:42 am
Great to see you, Drama Mama – I’m sure you’ll find some great support from these folks here.
#17 by Doreen Leigh on October 17, 2010 - 12:24 pm
Hi, Everyone! My user name is “Risada”. I would love to have some writing buddies. I completed NaNoWriMo last year. This year I am going to write a novel-version of a jukebox musical theatre play that I am wanting to write. NaNoWriMo will help me to take risks with it and see what works and what doesn’t. The basic premise is that the characters from The Wizard of Oz are in another tornado and end up in a Mayberry-like small town with amnesia. I have not been able to come up with a title yet….
#18 by last_lines on October 18, 2010 - 9:46 am
Hi “Risada”…added you as a NaNo buddy. I like the idea of your NaNo novel…definitely intriguing.
#19 by rozmorris on October 19, 2010 - 6:03 pm
Hi Doreen – I like the idea of using the novel version as an exercise to take risks.
As for the title – it sounds like the kind of problem a little brainstorming from the WriMo buddies could help with…
#20 by Crystal on October 27, 2010 - 6:35 pm
I added you as a buddy (lastnight). Your idea is really interesting.
#21 by Jonathan on October 18, 2010 - 8:36 am
Hi
I’ve added all of the above.
My user name is J_D_Moore. Make sure you use the underscores and the capitals because the versions without were all taken. My working title is Hero and Princess, because the idea started when Princess Mononoke wasn’t what I expected at all, and then I started developing what I thought was going to happen instead.
I’ve been working on my story summary over the last week and have just realised I don’t like what I’ve got for the last third, so I’ve got a bit of work to do, even before the start of November.
Good luck everyone.
#22 by last_lines on October 18, 2010 - 9:47 am
Hi. Saw your add on NaNoWriMo and have added you back.
#23 by Zelah on October 18, 2010 - 12:38 pm
I’m pleased to see that it looks like they’ve expanded the number of people you can have visible on your buddy lists now! It makes life so much better not to have to play around deleting and re-adding people so you can keep the active writers visible while not losing the user names of people you know who may write again some time in the future.
Good luck to everyone! Having this many (hopefully) active writers on there this year will be a real kick up the proverbial to me to keep on target!
#24 by rozmorris on October 18, 2010 - 12:51 pm
That’s great news, Zelah. Thanks for the update!

Hi all,
First time NaNoWriMoing – and I am almost ready to go. Would be good to know a few people who will be using twitter as well as the NaNoWriMo site?
Here’s my procrastination preparation post: http://cjeggett.co.uk/post/1319878623/how-i-am-preparing-for-nanowrimo
I would be especially interested to talk to anyone writing dystopian novels.

Lovely to see so many of you leaving your details here. Don’t forget that if you’re blogging about NaNoWriMo, as well as mentioning it here you can add your links to the NaNo blog chain (scroll up a bit and look to the left).

Er, I mean right. Not very good at left and right.

I have never NaNoWriMo-ed before. I took a creative writing class as an undergrad, but that was my last foray into this sort of thing. I think I am probably biting off more than I can chew with this thing, but that’s the whole idea, right?
I have no idea what my novel is about yet, but I’m looking forward to finding that out.
If you want a buddy that has no idea what they are doing, that’s me!
My name (on Twitter, too) is GingerInGeorgia
#33 by Carla René on October 20, 2010 - 3:58 am
Hmmmn. Doesn’t appear to be anyone else writing anything but fantasy. No one added me. Is it because I write comedy and historical fiction??
#34 by skylos on October 20, 2010 - 1:31 pm
If you think comedy and historical fiction are non-grata, you should take a look at the erotic fiction market…
#35 by Zelah on October 20, 2010 - 9:58 pm
Carla – I’ve just added you.
Remember that your buddy list just shows you who you have added as a buddy. If you want to see who has added you then you need to click on the ‘Writing Buddies’ side link from the ‘My NaNoWriMo’ page and click on the ‘buddy of’ tab. It’s different to what you might expect in that adding someone as a buddy doesn’t automatically make you their buddy too!
#36 by Verdonk on October 20, 2010 - 8:22 am
You may have hit the nail on the head there, Carla. Many publishers make a point of saying they won’t look at fantasy – there’s too much of it around, it’s too easy to write, and most of all it’s too easy to write badly! Maybe it’s time for a Fantasy/SF NaNoWriMo to split off so that the authors who are willing to tackle proper fiction don’t get drowned out.
#37 by Zelah on October 20, 2010 - 10:11 pm
I’d say that Fantasy/SF can still be proper fiction! :p
It’s true that it’s easier to write, though as you point out, writing it well is harder! I must confess that not needing to check historical details is a bonus in several of my ongoing plots that are classed in my mind as ‘Fantasy’ rather than ‘Historical’. I need to make sure that I keep the details I create consistent and believable for the setting though!
Most of my stories don’t have any dragons, magic, faries or such in them, they just take place in a made up historical flavoured world. They are largely taking place in made up worlds because otherwise the heroines wouldn’t really get to do much other than sit at home and embroider samplers! I mean, I know I could work with the social restrictions and create a plot that acknowledged that but, it’s not the story I want to be telling with those plots.
They might not be commercial but they’re what I feel like writing so I’m sticking with the ‘write what you want to write’ adage.
#38 by rozmorris on October 20, 2010 - 9:02 am
Carla, try Jason Black and Ludovica. They seem to be well away from fantasy, supernatural etc.
#39 by Carla René on October 21, 2010 - 8:54 am
Thanks, Roz–I will do that.
#40 by Dave on October 20, 2010 - 4:31 pm
I’ll be doing NaNoWriMo for the 4th time this year and I look forward for the many word wars (in person and on-line) we are going to have in my region. I mostly write fantasy but the more I write the more I slip to different subjects. Maybe I’ll do a NaNo next year about a non-fantasy story. Good luck to every participant and it’s never too late to join! The best part in all this, I met other writers and we are helping each other to write more and during editing!

#41 by Carla René on October 20, 2010 - 10:40 pm
This makes me wonder something: If there are so many writers who are writing fantasy/s/f, then why is it not a bigger market for the readers? This doesn’t add up. The largest genre right now, is nonfiction, believe it or not. NOT fantasy/s/f. So if that’s the case, and everyone is busy writing the next great Isaac Asimov novel, then who’s reading it, exactly? It has to be other authors, otherwise, with the amount of writers pumping it out, there’d be more evidence that it was the #1 genre.
I hate going into a new critique group, because other than Carl Sagen and Asimov that I read in high-school, I just don’t read fantasy/s/f, and those groups are sick with writers who fancy themselves the next J. K. Rowling (wanting her success as well), and that’s ALL I see up for critique. Perhaps Roz has a point in that most of it just isn’t written well, but I just can’t understand who is actually reading all of it.
Thanks to the other commenters. I will check my NaNo profile page and see if anyone’s added me. I wasn’t aware it worked like that, so glad of the information.
Risada, will add you. Glad to meet another comedy writer. Are you familiar with John Vorhaus? He just wrote me last night to say the premise for my NaNo novel made him laugh out loud. That’s akin to saying the Pope noticed how pious I am!
#42 by Doreen Leigh on October 21, 2010 - 1:08 am
Carla,
So, the guy who writes about how to be funny gave you a FANTASTIC compliment! That is so great!!!
#43 by rozmorris on October 21, 2010 - 8:31 am
That is pretty cool.
But what about the writers who fancy themselves as the next Dan Brown? Still,it wouldn’t be hard to be much better than the original.
#44 by Carla René on October 21, 2010 - 9:16 am
Thanks. Took me quite by surprise, and he’s now agreed to give me a book blurb as soon as the book releases this spring.
If I may, comedy is *much* harder to tackle than drama. Whether you’re a comedic actor, a stand-up, or writing comedic fiction, making someone laugh is much harder to do than to make someone ponder a poignant point, or cry over a sad scene. I know there will be some exceptions, but for the most part, comedians are playing to pretty sober audiences. I guess it’s because as people, we carry an inherent amount of grief with us–grief that has accrued in the form of unexpressed hurts throughout our lives, and it’s easier for that to come to the surface.
I just know that each time I tackle a piece of stand-up that I’m writing, or a new comedic short-story or essay, or even a comedic novel, I have to take an otherwise normal story filled with conflict, and layer it with multi-passes of tools needed to add pure comedy to the conflict, and not just a bunch of one-liners that will prove your story as posing and disingenuous.
I welcome your hate mail.

Hi, Roz. My name is Mike. On NaNo I am GCGeek. On Twitter I am @GCGeek. My friend Erik Deckers pointed me to this lovely site. I’ve never written a novel or short story. I blog. I’m a TV writer in training, and really hope to switch to that as a full-time career. My day job is technical writing, management, and IT. I have no idea yet what my novel shall be about – one of the reasons I’m here is to start cramming on preparation, character development, outlining, etc. Other writing friends talked me into this – I think it will be scary and fun. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and especially the camaraderie! Cheers!
#48 by rozmorris on October 25, 2010 - 1:43 pm
Mike – thanks for leaving your details. I’ve just been away for the weekend and found a great crowd of you have been here. So – sorry for the slight delay in zapping you through the spam customs department, but hope you now all find some like-minded buddies.
#49 by Kimberly on October 23, 2010 - 9:42 pm
My first year doing nanowrimo. I need lots of buddies, LOTS! I have no clue what I will be writing but I know I will come up with something in a week. My username is kstyle281.

Hi! I’m a newbie. My screenname is sheneeee : ) I am writing a novel about genius from MIT who abandons her path to greatness for her hometown where she wears a popcorn suit in front of a movie theater and befriends the guy who wears a cow suit with a halo across the street. It is an expansion on a short story I wrote. So excited/scared. This is my first time writing ANYTHING that long. I want to do a lot of planning but sometimes that takes some of the magic from me. Anyways, I have lots of support but no solidarity so I would love some buds : )
#51 by Kristy on October 24, 2010 - 2:45 am
I am a first timer of officially signing up for nano… I can be followed on twitter @kphilbrick or on the nano website as kristylee. I have a few plots kicking around, with some character development, but I have not decided if I’m going with my traditional romance theme, or stepping outside of my comfort zone and going for sci-fi drama… Time will tell
I’m excited to get to know you all!
#52 by Amy Jane (Untangling Tales) on October 25, 2010 - 6:02 am
I’m writing a YA modern fantasy that is an amalgam of a Russian epic poem (anyone heard of Tsar Saltan?) and an Arabian Nights tale set in a modern setting.
NaNo forum handle is Iliamna, but I’ve not figured ou yet how to take a name and make a buddy out of it on the site (I’d love directions).
This is my second serious attempt. I “won” in 06 and have been working on that one ever since. It was a Scandinavian folktale/arabian nights mash-up that worked well. I’m nervously psyc’d for November. Still wondering if I have another book inside of me.
#53 by Elspeth Antonelli on October 27, 2010 - 4:41 pm
This is my first NaNo; i’ve lurked before, but this year I’m actually going to attempt it. I’d love some company. I’m there as beththeimpaler. The name amuses me, although I don’t write about vampires – I write mysteries. Although a little voice is telling me this NaNo might be spent writing a romantic comedy.
#54 by Crystal on October 27, 2010 - 4:51 pm
I’m a newbie & I’d love to have some writing buddies. I’ve never attempted writing something this long, and I have no “IRL” writing buddies.
I’m trying to decide between expanding a 100-word fantasy writing exercise I did last fall or a YA romantic-drama story that I’ve been kicking around for about 9 years.
My NaNoWriMo name is the same as my twitter: lastnight
#55 by ~kevin on October 27, 2010 - 6:47 pm
Hey all! First-time Nanoer! My family and local friends don’t take my writing seriously, which makes it a serious challenge for ME to take my writing seriously, though I really want to. So I need all the writing buddies I can find. I love historical fiction, but am nervous about doing that work in a month with all the research involved, so I’m throwing another idea into the pot that I’ve been kicking around for years. It’s a YA suspense/thriller based on a high school shooting incident, BUT the characters are the story more than the plot is. It is about the lives of five random people who have no idea they are on a collision course, bound for that intersection of journeys when the gun goes off, forever linking them in that moment of time. Super excited about it and have a lot of thoughts and notes on paper to kick it off.
BUT I do need the encouragement (or shoving and kicking some days) to keep me going. And I’ll do the same for you!

Will add you now. I’m just about to release my first historical fiction entitled, The Gaslight Journal on Thanksgiving Day. Would you like a free copy of the MS by agreeing to be a beta reader for me? Let me know, and I’ll tell you what you need to do.
#57 by Jonathan Moore on October 28, 2010 - 1:47 pm
Hi Carla, I tried to sign up to be a beta reader too, but my message was knocked back. Maybe you’ve got a fantasy writer spam filter or something, but I do rad other stuff too.
I agree with the comments above about how hard it is to write comedy – I consider myself a pretty funny guy in real life, but when faced with a blank page the jumps that connect disparate things and make them funny just don’t exist anymore. I suspect it’s a confidence thing, since I couldn’t tell a joke to a stranger either.
#58 by Carla René on October 28, 2010 - 2:34 pm
Hi Jonathan,
Where do you mean the message bounced–from my web-site? It should be working.
Anyway, e-mail me here: playdohisabella@gmail.com and I’ll get you set up.
Are you a member of either Shelfari.com or Goodreads.com? I have started the same group on both sites called “Writing With My Colored Pencil,” and it’s a writing/discussion group for comedy writers. If you join one of the groups, I promise you by the time you’re there for a while, you’ll know how to put funny onto that page. There IS a method to the madness, and it’s just a matter of you learning the proper tools and when to use them.
#59 by rozmorris on October 28, 2010 - 7:25 pm
Carla, that sounds rather fun. I can’t say I write comedy but I’m interested nevertheless. Anyone else coming to join us on Goodreads?

Hello, all!
This will be my second NaNo, having won my a MASSIVE…29 words last year. The book I’m planning to write is the third in my Dark Fantasy series (the second of which, The Vampire’s Son, I chose to do for NaNo last year…the current status of that one is…well, let’s not dwell on the past!). I have kicked around ideas for this book since 2005, and now is the perfect opportunity to force something onto the page.
I already have a few buddies on my NaNo list from last year, but I’m not entirely sure how many of those are still active, so I’m always on the lookout for more!

This is my first time and I’m pretty scared! Well, no, I’m not really but I’m a bit apprehensive. I’m writing a romance – you just gotta love romances, haven’t you – set in the 23rd century and I’m looking forward to making a start when it all kicks off.
I’m pretty much confined to the house these days so I could do with cheering up from time to time if anyone wants an old and slightly worn out buddy.

HI Roz,
Great post!
I’m writing NaNoWriMo for the second year (“SW.Sussex”, sorry, not very imaginative) and this time I’m with the rebels: I’ll be writing 50k worth of Short Stories etc.
But that doesn’t mean I have given up hope to come across a story/idea that might get bigger and bigger and… we’ll see… It’ll be harder this year as I work more or less full-time, but my family knows that I will be lost to the world for amonth ;+).
I’d love to have more buddies and maybe stay in contact after November too( such a shame if it ends on 30.11.)
Happy Nano-ing everybody!

Hey Susanne,
The novel I’m beginning tomorrow (but that I’ve been outlining for 3 weeks off and on), was once a germ of a comedy idea: A priest is so claustrophobic, he makes his congregants sit inside the confessional while he sits outside. Because I used the proper tools for character creation, story arc and comic premise, I’m now turning it into a novel that I already have generated interest in from folks who work in comedy.
So it’s entirely conceivable that you can turn a short-story into a workable novel.
What genre of stories are your shorts?
Once again, if any of you are comedy writers or are interested in learning how to inject serious humour into your fiction or essays, I’ve set up two writing groups on Goodreads.com and Shelfari.com. Writing with My Colored Pencil is the group name on both. And when I get a moment to breathe, I’ll be generating discussions based on works-in-progress as well as posted articles of how to be funny even if you’re not.
Anyway, good-luck with it.
